An ad used to end at the click. OpenAI just erased that boundary. Sponsored Agents, rolling out now to select US advertisers inside ChatGPT, let a user tap an ad and drop straight into a live conversation with an AI agent representing that brand, pulling in pricing, inventory, and product detail on the spot. Pair that with the new Ads Manager plugin, which builds and edits campaigns from plain-language instructions, and fresh integrations that pipe results directly into HubSpot and Shopify, and the ad has stopped being a media placement. It is now a sales rep with your logo on it, running on infrastructure you do not control, feeding data into systems you do.
Most marketing and RevOps teams are going to treat this as a targeting update. It is not. It is a new lead source with no consent trail, no transcript ownership policy, and no field in the CRM built to hold what it produces.
What Actually Shipped
Strip away the launch framing and three concrete things changed:
Sponsored Agents let a user who taps an ad open a labeled, separate conversation with an advertiser-backed agent, distinct from their conversation with ChatGPT itself. The agent can answer product questions, check details, and move the user toward a purchase, all inside the chat window.
The Ads Manager plugin replaces the campaign dashboard with plain-language instructions: an advertiser tells it what to build, adjust, or measure, and it executes. That is a permission model, not a UI update, and it is the same write-access pattern showing up across marketing automation this year.
HubSpot and Shopify integrations close the loop. HubSpot users can connect a ChatGPT Ads account, launch campaigns, and follow up on leads without leaving HubSpot. Shopify merchants in the US get a native ChatGPT Ads app now, expanding to more markets on September 23. Whatever a Sponsored Agent conversation produces is designed to land directly in the systems your revenue team already runs on.

The Lead Type Your Funnel Has Never Handled
A form fill gives you a name, an email, and maybe a UTM string. A Sponsored Agent conversation gives you a transcript: what the prospect asked, what pricing the agent quoted, what objections came up, and what the agent promised on your behalf. That is richer than anything your SDR team gets on a first touch, and it is also a liability if nobody owns it.
Three questions your funnel has no answer for today:
Who reviews what the agent said before it counts as a commitment. If the agent quotes a price or a feature that is not accurate, that conversation is now a customer-facing statement your brand made, generated by a system your marketing team did not write and cannot fully audit in real time.
What consent basis covers the conversation once it becomes a CRM record. A chat transcript captured inside a platform you do not operate is a different data provenance problem than a form your own site collected, and most privacy and retention policies were drafted before this existed.
Where the transcript lives once HubSpot receives it. A lead record with a name and an email is easy to route. A lead record with an embedded sales conversation is not, and most CRM schemas have no field for it, no retention rule for it, and no one assigned to read it before a rep calls.
Build the Intake Before You Turn On the Spend
None of this is a reason to sit out. It is a reason to build the receiving end before the sending end goes live. Marketing ops teams that treat this like a routine ad channel launch will be the ones explaining a bad transcript to legal in Q4.
Sponsored
- Assign an owner for reviewing agent transcripts flagged for pricing or product claims, not just lead volume
- Add a transcript field and retention policy to the CRM object before the first campaign goes live, not after the first complaint
- Write a correction protocol for when the agent misquotes price, availability, or a feature, including who notifies the prospect
- Confirm your privacy policy covers conversational data captured on OpenAI's infrastructure, not just data your own site collects
- Set a spend cap on the Ads Manager plugin's plain-language campaign creation until a human has reviewed its first three campaigns unedited
- Brief sales on how to open a follow-up call when the prospect has already had a full product conversation with an agent, not a human
The Real Shift
Every AI-agent story in marketing this year has been about agents acting on your behalf inside your own stack: writing to your CRM, editing your automations, browsing on your behalf. Sponsored Agents flip the direction. Now an agent acts on your behalf inside someone else's platform, in a conversation you do not see until it is already logged as a lead. The teams that win the next two quarters of ChatGPT Ads will not be the ones with the biggest budget. They will be the ones who built the intake process before the first conversation ever happened.
If your CRM's definition of a lead still starts and ends with a form, you are not ready to turn this on. Fix that first.
